Board gaming from afar!
Nick T from Board Game Review suggests some games that work well from afar and can be played while taking part in Raise your Game.
Dementia UK’s Raise Your Game campaign is gathering great momentum in the lead up to the many events planned for October. With social distancing still very much in force, I wanted to suggest some games that work well from afar, so that this isn’t a barrier that stops you taking part and raising money for the charity.

Just One
For those that cannot meet up, ‘Just One’ is a game that works brilliantly over a video call. It is a light co-operative party game where players will collectively strive for the best score possible. Everyone will take it in turns to guess a word from the single word clues offered by the rest of the players. While this sounds like an easy task, there are additional rules that add to the complexity and hilarity of the game. With one person owning the game, other players simply need a pen and pad to join in.
Perudo
‘Perudo’ is a favourite of Stephen Fry’s and also works exceptionally well over video calls. All players will need a cup and six dice, and one person will need the game to learn the rules. In this elimination game, players take it in turns to outbid and bluff other players on the quantity of dice bearing a certain number around the table. The last player with dice remaining is the winner.
Quacks of Quedlinburg
If you are able to meet and socially distance at a table, there are many more games that work well. Probably my favourite in this instance is ‘Quacks of Quedlinburg’. Every player builds a bag of ingredients to create the best potion. As you are playing with your own bag and cauldron, you are not all leaning around a central shared board. The ingredient tokens need to be divided up before the game and you have to designate a scorer and a dice roller to stop passing things around too much, but there is lots of fun to be had!
Patchwork Doodle
‘Patchwork Doodle’ is another game that works well at two metres. You will need plenty of colouring pencils or felt-tips for this one though! This is a genteel game where each player has their own sheet and unique starting shape to start their ‘patchwork’. After this, cards are flipped and all players fit the same polyomino shape into their grid. Patchworks are scored over three rounds and the winner is the person with the most points at the end of the game.
These, and other favourites that I can play with my family, like ‘Ticket to Ride’, ‘Carcassonne’ and ‘Kingdomino’, will all be making an appearance in my 24-hour sponsored board game marathon for Raise Your Game.
