The Care and Support Alliance

In 2021 the Government announced long-awaited social care reforms. While some progress has been made, these reforms do not address some of the fundamental problems in social care – those of access, quality and workforce.

Too many families affected by dementia are struggling to access limited or inadequate services. Families are trying to fill the gaps in services themselves, with little support for their own needs. 

The Government promised to fix social care  – but social care isn’t fixed yet.

We are part part of the Care and Support Alliance (CSA) which represent over 70 of Britain’s leading charities campaigning alongside the millions of older people, disabled people and their carers who deserve decent care. 

On June 16, 2022 we took part in the Care and Support Alliance’s day of action on social care. We used Twitter to amplify the need for better social care system for families affected by dementia and shared quotes from families affected by dementia throughout the day.

We will continue working with the CSA to highlight the challenges that people are facing and the change that is needed.

Continuing Healthcare Alliance

NHS continuing healthcare (CHC) is a package of care arranged and funded by the NHS in England for people with long-term, complex health and care needs. We are part of the Continuing Healthcare Alliance, a group of 20 charities and organisations who believe that NHS continuing healthcare needs to improve. They aim to make continuing healthcare fairer and easier to access for those who need it most.

In the House of Commons last year, the then Shadow Health Minister, Justin Madders MP, raised the CHC Alliance’s concerns about CHC and how it would be impacted by the ICS plans. As a result, an amendment was made to the Health and Care Bill stating that the CQC should have a duty to inspect ICSs. This will ensure additional independent assurance. Earlier this year, in the House of Lords, the Minister confirmed that NHS England will have the necessary powers to take action against an ICS. As a member of the Continuing Healthcare Alliance, we are pleased that these important issues were debated in Parliament.

National Voices

We are a member of National Voices, the leading coalition of health and social care charities in England bringing together over 190 members across the country.

In March 2022 on the second anniversary of the first Covid-19 lockdown in the UK, the government launched their ‘living with Covid’ plan. We signed a shared statement with National Voices which reflected on the toll that Covid has taken, and continues to take on people throughout the country. Our insights were included in this statement.
